Artificial turf drawing technology
Drawing is the core pre process in the production of artificial turf, using PE (polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene) as the main substrates. Through melting extrusion cooling stretching heat setting, plastic particles are processed into grass yarn. The strength, wear resistance, rebound, UV resistance, and external feel of the grass yarn are all determined by the drawing process and formula, directly determining the service life and sports performance of the turf product.
1、 Technical principles
After the plastic particles melt at high temperature, they are extruded through a die to form primary fibers; Freezing form through rapid cooling with cold water; Further longitudinal stretching is carried out to align the polymer chains in the direction of force, significantly improving the fracture strength and wear resistance; Finally, heat setting eliminates internal stress, controls shrinkage rate, and obtains stable and usable lawn grass fibers.
2、 Complete process flow
Batching & MixingPrecise blending of base resin, color masterbatch, UV‑resistant stabilizers, antioxidants and processing additives. Gravimetric dosing outperforms volumetric dosing to ensure uniform dispersion of pigments and additives, preventing color deviation and insufficient weather resistance.Melt ExtrusionExtruder temperature: 220‑250 °C. The screw fully plasticizes materials and delivers them under stable pressure to the spinneret die. The die cross‑section defines grass‑yarn profiles (flat, U‑shaped, diamond‑shaped, stem‑reinforced, S‑shaped, etc.). Die precision governs thickness consistency of yarn filaments.Water‑bath QuenchingExtruded filaments immediately enter a cooling water bath at 20‑35 °C for rapid setting of cross‑section geometry. Excessively high water temperature causes defects such as filament wrinkling, black spots and uneven thickness.Stretching & DrawingDrawing is carried out via multiple sets of traction rollers with an industrial draw ratio of 4‑8 times. A higher draw ratio yields lower yarn dtex and higher tensile strength. Insufficient draw ratio results in soft, easily‑lodged grass yarn; excessive draw ratio makes yarn brittle and prone to breakage.Heat‑settingHigh‑temperature water bath (≥95 °C) or hot‑roll heat‑setting releases internal stress generated during drawing and controls thermal shrinkage rate. Inadequate heat‑setting leads to grass‑yarn shrinkage, wrinkling and dimensional deformation under outdoor service conditions.Post‑treatment (as required)Crimped yarn: Straight filaments are impacted by high‑temperature and high‑pressure airflow on an air‑texturing machine to form crimped structures.Split‑film net yarn: Plastic film is extruded and slitted, then splits naturally into net‑shaped fibres during drawing.Winding: Constant‑tension winding produces grass‑yarn bobbins for downstream twisting and tufting processes.
