LFL Grass artificial grass

Short answer: pet artificial grass is synthetic turf engineered for dogs and cats – softer yarn, no hard burrs, a perforated backing that drains urine quickly, and a pile height of 30-40 mm that stands up to digging and running. It removes mud, weeds and lawn patches, and stays hygienic when it is flushed and cleaned on a simple schedule.

What makes pet artificial grass different

Pet artificial grass looks like ordinary synthetic lawn but is built around three problems ordinary turf ignores: paws, waste and odour. The yarn is softer and free of sharp fibrils so claws do not catch. The backing is perforated so liquid passes straight through instead of sitting on the surface. Density is higher than decorative turf so a running dog does not flatten the pile into a patch.

Why pet owners replace natural lawn with pet artificial grass

  • No mud, no bare patches. Dogs can run and dig without turning the lawn into a clay pit, and paws stay clean enough to come inside.
  • Fast drainage. A perforated backing plus a compacted, sloped base moves urine and rain away from the surface.
  • Fewer irritants. No fertiliser, herbicide or pesticide cycle means no chemical residue on the surface your dog lies on.
  • All-year green. The lawn looks the same in January as in July, which matters when the yard is also the view from the house.
  • Cheaper to run. No watering, mowing or re-seeding, and less mud tracked indoors.
  • Safe footing. Non-slip surface with consistent grip, unlike wet, worn natural grass.

Specifying pet artificial grass: the numbers that matter

Base50-100 mm compacted aggregate, 1-2% fallDrainage and stable footing even in heavy rain

Does pet artificial grass smell?

Not when it drains. Odour comes from ammonia and bacteria that stay on a surface, so the two things that prevent it are drainage and flushing. Rinse pet artificial grass weekly with a hose, use an enzymatic cleaner on the spots your dog favours, and treat the run with a mild non-toxic disinfectant once a month. Our guide to stopping dog urine smell on artificial grass walks through the full routine.

Installation for a pet-friendly lawn

  1. Excavate 60-100 mm and compact the sub-base.
  2. Add and compact crushed stone, keeping a fall away from the house.
  3. Fit a weed membrane so nothing grows through the backing.
  4. Roll out the turf, let it relax, then trim and seam the edges.
  5. Fix the perimeter with U-shaped nails and check there is no lifting edge a claw can catch.
  6. Flush the whole surface once before handing it over to the dog.

Cleaning schedule that keeps the lawn hygienic

  • Daily: pick up solid waste immediately.
  • Weekly: hose the whole surface, then brush the pile upright.
  • Monthly: apply an enzymatic cleaner where the dog toilets, and rinse again.
  • Seasonally: remove leaves that block drainage, check seams and edge fixings.
  • In hot weather: rinse more often, because ammonia concentrates as surface temperature rises.

Frequently asked questions

Is artificial grass safe for dogs and cats?

Quality pet turf uses non-toxic polyethylene fibre with no pesticide or fertiliser cycle. Avoid hard, brittle yarn and loose infill, fix all edges flush, and the surface is safe for chewing-adjacent play and lying. The ASPCA dog care library is a useful starting point for general pet-safety questions.

Will a dog dig through artificial grass?

A determined dog can lift an unsecured corner, which is why the perimeter must be pinned or edged. Dense backing and a compacted base stop casual digging within hours of installation in most yards.

How hot does pet turf get in summer?

It warms up in direct sun like any synthetic surface. Lighter fibre colours, a lighter infill and shade from plants or a pergola all reduce surface temperature, and hosing the lawn down on hot afternoons brings it back down quickly.
